Information no longer travels at the speed of the newsroom. It moves at the speed of networks, algorithms and machines.
Across the current global information economy, fibre-optic cables, 5G networks, cloud platforms, edge computing, artificial intelligence and satellite systems have transformed how news, financial data, scientific discoveries and public information move from one point to another.
The scale is unprecedented. The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) estimates that about 6 billion people, or 74% of the world’s population, were online in 2025, while 5G networks covered about 55% of the global population.
Behind that connectivity is a sophisticated technology stack. Companies such as Cloudflare, Akamai, Google, Microsoft, Amazon Web Services and Meta operate critical layers of the digital infrastructure through which billions of messages, videos, transactions and data requests move every day.
Cloudflare reported that global Internet traffic grew 19% in 2025, reflecting the accelerating dependence on digital services. Its network spans more than 330 cities and handled an average of more than 81 million HTTP requests per second during the year.
Akamai, another major player in content delivery and cloud security, reported processing an average of 1,678 terabytes of data daily in 2025, illustrating the enormous infrastructure required to deliver digital content at scale.
At the physical layer, submarine fibre-optic cables remain the backbone of global information exchange, carrying more than 99% of international data flows, according to the ITU. Satellites increasingly complement this infrastructure by extending connectivity to hard-to-reach areas.
Artificial intelligence is now adding another layer to the information revolution. Generative AI platforms can process enormous volumes of data, summarise documents, translate languages and generate content within seconds, fundamentally changing how information is produced and consumed.
But speed also creates new vulnerabilities. Misinformation can spread globally almost instantly, while cyberattacks can disrupt essential digital infrastructure. Cloudflare recorded more than 25 record-breaking DDoS attacks in 2025. The emerging information order, therefore, is not simply about communicating faster. It is about building faster, intelligent, secure and resilient networks capable of moving trusted information at planetary scale.
The strategic advantage increasingly belongs to those who control the infrastructure, intelligence and security that make instantaneous information possible.
