Daudi Migereko named business trendsetter

Daudi Migereko, the former Minister of Energy and Mineral Development and Lands, Housing and Urban Development, was recently honored by Business Trend Setters Galore for his transformative contributions to financial inclusion for women and underserved communities.

The award ceremony took place earlier this month at the Sheraton Kampala Hotel and was attended by Joyce Ssebugwawo, the current Minister of State for Information, Communication Technology, and National Guidance.

Migereko was recognized for his pivotal role in founding FINCA Uganda in 1992, alongside the late Sam Kigwana and Rupert Scofield.

Together, they established the first women’s financial inclusion groups, Kimanto Twegaite and Wakitaka Biribawa, providing them with financial education, training, and initial loans.

This initiative marked the beginning of village banking in Uganda, which has become a cornerstone of micro-credit and SACCOs in the country.

Over the past 33 years, FINCA Uganda has grown to include 30 branches nationwide, extending its services to neighboring countries in the Great Lakes region of Africa.

In his acceptance speech, Migereko dedicated the award to the late Rupert Scofield, praising his visionary efforts to combat global poverty.

“He was a purposefully driven gentleman with a great vision. His determination to fight poverty globally is a vision we continue to uphold,” Migereko stated.

The Business Trend Setter Awards, an annual event celebrating outstanding contributions in both private and public sectors, this year focused on the theme “Artificial Intelligence, Your Mind, and Your Business.”

In addition to Migereko, notable figures such as veteran journalist Bart Kakooza and Asharaf Ssemwogerere were also honored for their significant impacts across various sectors.
