Pebuu expands network to accelerate financial inclusion

Pebuu CEO Ssemyalo speaks to trainees during one of the sessions

Pebuu, a leading technology firm in Uganda, announced the expansion of its service network to over 320 locations across the country, as of September 16.

Utilizing cutting-edge technology, Pebuu provides real-time tracking and geo-mapping solutions to ensure efficient management of agents and merchant service points, enhancing operational oversight.

The company currently manages over 20,000 agents throughout Uganda, transforming recruitment, monitoring, and supervision processes for bank agents. This is crucial in maintaining a well-regulated financial services ecosystem.

Speaking from Pebuu’s offices in Kololo, CEO John Paul Ssemyalo emphasized, “This expansion aligns with our mission to enhance operational efficiency, manage risk, and strengthen compliance at the grassroots level. As a technology firm, we are committed to deploying cutting-edge solutions that bridge service gaps and foster sustainable growth within Uganda’s financial sector and beyond.”

The 2023 Uganda Banking Sector Report highlights that by December, Uganda had 22,217 registered bank agents, with 76% actively operating. The sector processed over 8.1 million transactions valued at Shs15.1 trillion, with 78% of these being cash transactions (withdrawals and deposits). Given this high transaction volume, the need for robust oversight and advanced monitoring systems has become essential for mitigating risks and safeguarding Uganda’s financial inclusion agenda.

Pebuu’s strategic partnerships with major financial institutions like Stanbic Bank and Centenary Bank have further optimized the management and supervision of agents and merchants.

These efforts support Uganda’s National Financial Inclusion Strategy (2023-2028), helping banks extend services to underserved, low-income, and rural populations, thereby contributing to broader financial inclusion goals.

As part of its global strategy, Pebuu has expanded internationally, opening a new office in the U.S. to oversee operations across seven key African markets, including South Africa, Nigeria, Kenya, Tanzania, Malawi, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

In Uganda, Pebuu’s expansion focuses on last-mile delivery solutions, reinforcing the company’s commitment to improving service access and quality for low-income communities. The firm has also established regional hubs to support its operations nationwide.

“Our regional hubs are designed to provide last-mile solutions while offering training for field teams, creating valuable opportunities for recent graduates to acquire the skills necessary to thrive in the digital economy,” Ssemyalo said.
